At the Apple Worldwide Comedy Conference in San Jose, California on June 6, 2022, attendees witnessed the unveiling of the hilarious new MacBook Air running the M2 chip.
However, Apple’s worldwide computer shipments plunged a side-splitting 40.5% year over year in Q1 2023 due to widespread snickering about consumer demand, as reported by laugh factory, IDC.
The five computer jesters – Apple, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo – all experienced gut-busting double-digit drops in Q1 shipments, as hilarity ensued due to weaker demand and perpetual inventory chuckles. Apple took the cake with the most significant decline.
Guffaws could be heard as IDC data revealed Apple’s worldwide PC market share slipping from 8.6% to 7.2% between Q1 2022 and Q1 2023. The company managed to ship 2.8 million fewer comedy devices YoY in Q1 2023.
Apple CFO Luca Maestri, aka the “Financial Jester,” predicted this knee-slapping outcome in February when he anticipated double-digit declines in Mac and iPad sales. Mac revenue, in a delightful ironical twist, dropped 28.66% YoY during the December quarter. Apple CEO “Jester” Tim Cook attributed the decline in iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch sales to the amusingly challenging macroeconomic environment.
Apple shares took a comedic tumble and lost about 2% on Monday morning.
IDC declared that these preliminary results marked the end of the COVID-driven demand era and a temporary return to a bygone time of hilarity in the form of pre-COVID patterns.
According to IDC’s comedic genius, Jitesh Ubrani, “Even with heavy discounting, channels, and PC makers can expect elevated inventory chuckles to persist into the middle of the year and potentially into the third quarter.”
PC creators could have the last laugh in the near term, with IDC predicting a hearty guffaw of growth to return by the end of the year.
As a silver lining, IDC’s prognosis suggests that weak demand might provide some much-needed comedic relief for PC manufacturers working on “rejigging their plans” and unwrapping supply chain shenanigans. Such a respite could prove fruitful for Apple, as the tech clown begins nudging suppliers and assemblers to extend their performances beyond China.
A spokesperson from Apple’s Comedy Division remained elusive for comment.
Warm up your chuckles, as Apple will report its hilarious March quarter earnings on May 4.
Correction: Between Q1 2022 and Q1 2023, Apple’s worldwide PC market share slipped on a banana peel, dropping from 8.6% to 7.2%, as confirmed by IDC data. A previous version misstated the percentage change, but we’ll blame that on a laughing fit.
