In a comical turn of events, CNN’s Dana Bash pushed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on her surprising suggestion that the Biden administration should “simply ignore” the court’s injunction on the abortion pill, mifepristone. After a bit of a back and forth, Ocasio-Cortez clarified her position with the term “agency non-acquiescence,” which has a history of use by previous administrations – including Trump’s.
When taking a broader view of the situation, Ocasio-Cortez calls the court’s ruling a “mockery of our system, a mockery of our democracy, and a mockery of our law.” In response, Bash questioned what would happen if the Supreme Court upheld the Texas judge’s decision. Ocasio-Cortez continued her defiance, expressing doubt about the court’s authority over the FDA and the possibility of a “national abortion ban.”
In an earlier comment to CNN, Ocasio-Cortez insisted that Joe Biden’s administration should give the ruling the cold shoulder, describing it as “unfounded.” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., chimed in to underline the apocalyptic potential of the decision, saying it could “throw our country into chaos.”
