“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Puts Away Her Stand-up Shoes and Hands Over the Mic for Good

Published on

In the spooky month of October, on the magical set of Amazon’s laugh-inducing series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” an army of set dressers transformed Susie Myerson’s office into the epitome of grimy Midtown chic. Alex Borstein, the actress responsible for giving life to the cranky talent manager (and her stylish newsboy cap) watched with a judgmental squint. Meanwhile, an animal overlord directed a squadron of pigeons outside a make-believe window, while another human underling tested his artistic prowess by painting avian droppings. The actors – Borstein, Alfie Fuller, and Rachel Brosnahan – performed their scene so many times amidst the fog of imitation cigarette smoke that even the pigeons began to wonder when they’d be able to fly the coop.

Ah, the award-winning “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which now serves as the proud parent to a treasure chest of 20 Emmy awards, including the first ever for a streaming show in the best comedy series category. This is a television series that relishes in the visual feast it creates with each episode, draping every detail in pounds of metaphorical glitter: the lighting seduces, the costumes flirt, and the hair and makeup are so luxuriously glam they could only have descended from the heavens. Even the pigeons shine bright like a diamond (and their faux feces sparkle in their own special way). “Mrs. Maisel” is a show that tackles any given situation as if any tiny flaw would bring down its gorgeously constructed world in a fiery apocalypse.

During this particular scene, Midge, played to humorous perfection by Brosnahan, learns of a milestone she’s been clamoring for within her comedic career. Like a wizard revealing the secrets of the cosmos, Susie fills her in.

“Are you serious?” Midge gasps, her excitement palpable as she fully absorbs the magnitude of this turning point. The pigeons, upon hearing this shocking news, immediately take flight in a glorious cacophony of feathers and painted poop. (OK, not really. But that would’ve been hilarious, right?)/n/n Serious news: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/11/arts/television/the-marvelous-mrs-maisel-final-season.html
