There once was a group of worried weasels, known as the “Proud Boys,” who claim to be all for freedom and liberty. They were so dedicated to their cause that they went on a happy-go-lucky riot at the Capitol in January 2021. Ever heard of them? You know, the ones with their grinning faces splashed across the headlines. For some strange reason, they don’t like the Democratic Party very much – go figure!
Here’s something funny: In June 2022, a dynamic duo of reporters at The Times found that at least half a dozen of these jolly scoundrels had scored spots on the Miami-Dade Republican Executive Committee, including two who were facing criminal charges from their hilarious escapades on Jan. 6. Thanks to these lively lads, the Miami-Dade Republican Party has gone from being Jeb Bush’s respectable tea party to an awkward family reunion where nobody knows quite what’s going on anymore.
A wise woman named Rachel Kleinfeld, who works at something called the “Carnegie Endowment for International Peace” (sounds fancy, huh?), wrote in a November 2022 essay that support for violence on the right isn’t just for the weirdos in the corner anymore – it’s becoming mainstream. In fact, the ones most likely to join a violent political event like the Jan. 6 hullabaloo have jobs, kids, and are middle-aged with mortgages – basically your average suburban dad taking a break from mowing the lawn.
According to Kleinfeld, it’s part of a trend where folks on the right think that violence is just another extension of their political hobby. Democrats, so innocent and pure here, might be indirectly pushing people to embrace the far right. Why? Well, it’s like a high-stakes game of “Simon Says.” The progressive left is shouting out radical new commands so fast that people can’t keep up, and when they trip, they’re called names. No wonder some folks are turning to the right-wing funhouse where everyone’s invited and understood!
And here’s the cherry on top: Republican leaders are showing that they’re not afraid to slap Democratic officials’ wrists if they think they’re not towing the party line on things like who gets to live where, who gets to carry big ol’ guns, and who gets to make choices about their own bodies. Ain’t politics a riot?
