Well, well, well, it seems that the House GOP has hit a bit of a snag with their grand plan to treat asylum seekers like they’re the next big evil. Swing district lawmakers simply won’t stand for it, saying that it’s just too harsh. It’s almost as if basing your policies on the ridiculous fantasy world created by those MAGA ads is a bad idea! Who would have thought?
But the Democrats aren’t exactly seizing the moment either. President Biden needs to step up his game if they want to make the most out of the GOP’s disarray. Let’s be real, folks, it’s not like the Democrats need more opportunities to mess things up. They’re pretty good at doing that all on their own.
Apparently, the sticking point for the GOP’s border bill is that it would essentially put an end to asylum seeking. Yes, you heard that right, folks. Instead of dealing with immigrants in a humane and just way, the GOP just wants to shut the door on them completely. However, some Republicans are beginning to realize that treating people like garbage might not be the best way to win votes.
Now, here’s where the Democrats can really make a move. They need to push their own immigration reform agenda HARD. A large increase in funding to process asylum seekers more quickly, combined with new channels for migrants to work legally could be just the ticket. And let’s not forget about legalization for groups such as farmworkers and “dreamers”. It’s time to give Republicans what they SAY they want.
Senator Robert Menendez is leading the way with a package that includes these ideas, and even some GOP governors are on board. But, of course, the Biden administration just can’t seem to get it together. With a covid-19 asylum limit set to lift in May, Biden’s plan is to severely limit applications at the border. Sounds good, until you realize that he’s essentially reneging on his human rights commitments to those seeking refuge. Nice one, Joe.
In the end, it’s clear where the GOP stands on immigration. They don’t want more immigrants in the United States, plain and simple. But presenting a Democratic alternative now could really shake things up. It’s time to send a clear message about what the party stands for, and that muddled message from Biden isn’t going to cut it. Let’s hope he pulls it together soon, before we’re all stuck with another four years of chaos.
