Are you ready to laugh? Well, get ready because today we’re talking about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s opposition to allowing Democrats to temporarily replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee. McConnell is like a grumpy old man who doesn’t want anyone else to have any fun.
During McConnell’s remarks on the Senate floor, he argued that adding another Democratic vote to the committee would only allow Democrats to “force through their very worst nominees.” As if Republicans have never done the same thing.
Remember when Barack Obama was president and McConnell blocked the nomination to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court? Yeah, good times. But now that the shoe is on the other foot, McConnell suddenly cares about the “very worst nominees.” Give me a break.
Now, you might be thinking, why can’t they just replace Feinstein on the committee without all this drama? Well, apparently it takes 60 votes to approve, which means at least 10 Republicans would need to back the measure. And let’s face it, McConnell is not going to let that happen.
Even Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer’s proposal to have Sen. Ben Cardin temporarily replace Feinstein is bound to fail in the face of Republican opposition. It’s like trying to convince a toddler to eat their vegetables. It’s just not going to happen.
Feinstein’s absence has caused confirmations of some of Biden’s nominees to stall, and the White House has called the Democrats’ request “reasonable.” But of course, Republicans are opposing it because why not? It’s not like they have anything better to do.
But not all Democrats are on board with the temporary replacement. Sen. Joe Manchin III thinks it’s ridiculous and points out that other members have been gone for a year or more, and no one called for their resignation. It’s like a circus without a ringleader.
In the end, McConnell stressed that he holds Feinstein in high regard, calling her “a titanic figure” and “a stateswoman.” It’s funny how compliments can be used as a backhanded insult. But he also wishes her a speedy recovery, and we can all agree on that.
