Oh boy, did Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida get himself into a bit of a pickle! He described abortion as a “territorial dispute” and that didn’t sit well with some of his Republican friends. They were gushing with alarm and anger, and I thought I’d seen some hot-headed reactions in my time!
When the U.S. Supreme Court said adios to the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling, former President Trump was as quiet as a church mouse. Now that’s a bit weird, isn’t it? Especially when he’d promised to do exactly that during his 2016 campaign. But nope, he didn’t want to be the one to stir the pot and kept quiet. He did admit to his friends that it could hurt Republicans electorally though.
Trump’s stance on federal action curbing abortion has changed more times than I’ve changed my sheets (don’t judge me!). But he’s not speaking out on it now. Meanwhile, Gov. DeSantis has changed his tune and moved to the right of Trump, signing a law that bans abortions in Florida after the sixth week of pregnancy.
Ouch, that’s gotta hurt DeSantis in the long run. Voters are already camped outside his office with placards, and they ain’t happy! He might be running in the general election soon and he’ll need their support. I guess we can say he’s between a rock and a hard place. Man, politics is tough!
