Prosecutors investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol are probing the possibility that the Trump campaign was indulging in a li’l bit of fibbing, making false and fabulous fraud claims in their fundraising efforts. They believe the campaign stretched the truth like taffy, which generated over $200 million in donations from very serious and committed conservatives.
Now, you may ask, what’s the big deal? Well, you see, it appears that investigators are going down a similar legal rabbit hole as they did while chasing the elusive Trump adviser Stephen K. Bannon. Remember him? Bannon was accused of playing fast and loose with the truth in some fraudulent fundraising for a wall along the southern border. Bannon, however, managed to snag a pardon from Trump before his trial.
As the subpoenas and testimonies fly around Washington like confetti, officials like Ken Cuccinelli and Stephen Miller have been spotted hanging out at the courthouse. Meanwhile, prosecutors are keeping their ears to the ground on Trump’s handling of classified materials after he retired to Mar-a-Lago.
It’s like a multi-fronted game of whack-a-mole, with not one but two grand juries regularly convening in Washington to discuss all things Trump. Like a good potluck dinner, the investigations keep the special counsel’s office interested in everything from classified documents to the “Election Defense Fund.”
And it turns out, all this post-election fuss was a real cash cow for Trump’s campaign. Turns out when you tell people the election was stolen, it’s like hitting a financial jackpot! People were practically throwing their money at the campaign, despite some insiders being uncomfortable with the language used in their fundraising emails. At the end of the day, though, many people involved in the fundraising simply say they were parroting the words of the president (but that doesn’t mean they’re off the hook).
Despite the legal circus and the questions surrounding these emails, one thing’s for sure: both Republicans and Democrats have been known to use hyperbolic and misleading language in their fundraising efforts. But, will Trump’s team end up joining Bannon’s legal brigade? Time will tell, and that’s gonna be one wild ride.
