Pentagon Document Leak: BFFs Beware, Between Spies, it’s Just Frenemies!

Published on

It’s official: the United States government loves some good old-fashioned spying. They just can’t get enough! Even after the highly publicized scandal that was the National Security Agency (NSA) leaks by Edward Snowden, the US is still secretly gathering intel on its allies. The fact that this classified information was first shared on Discord by meme groups just goes to show that the government can’t even keep its own secrets under wraps anymore.

The man at the center of this latest leak is a real charmer. He’s a gun enthusiast, a real catch for any Discord group searching for companionship, and he also just so happens to have access to highly sensitive material. How lucky for them! He transcribed the classified documents he stole from his job on a “military base” and shared them with his online friends. What a great guy.

The documents contained information so sensitive that it requires extensive security checks and months of background checks to view. But who needs all that when you can just make friends with a gun enthusiast who has access to top-secret information, right? You can trust him, he’s cool.

Even though the leaks contain some not-so-surprising conclusions (who knew that Viktor Orban didn’t like the US?), other revelations have left foreign governments reeling. It turns out the allegations of arms dealing with Russia have caused a bit of an awkward silence from Turkey and selective denial from Egypt. Meanwhile, Ukraine is publicly denying the allegations, but privately, they’re sweating a bit.

The US has always had its fingerprints all over the world of high-tech surveillance, but thanks to the Snowden leaks, it’s been pushed under the microscope. Despite the diplomatic anger that followed, the US is still at it. Now, the nature of global communication has just made it easier to scoop up all kinds of juicy intel with minimal effort.

Let’s not forget the fallout from the previous leaks. The Brazilian President canceled a trip to the US after finding out her phone was being tracked. The revelations about Angela Merkel’s surveillance soured US-Germany relations for years. President Obama even apologized (which we all know is a rare thing in politics).

The recent document leak may not have caused as big of a stir as previous leaks, but this time, it’s personal. The detailed nature of the information released could be particularly damaging. It might even force Ukraine to alter their plans and damage relations between them and the US.

The United States’ closest partners, the Five Eyes intelligence sharing club, may not be directly spied on, but they still have reason for concern. Even the British government had no idea that their surveillance plane was almost shot down by a Russian fighter jet until the leaked information came out. Oops!

Now, the United States government has a real problem on their hands. They’re simply collecting too much information and sharing it with too many people. It’s like they’re that friend who can’t keep a secret. The NSA should take a lesson from Oprah: “You get a secret, you get a secret, everyone gets a secret!”
