Hey there all you theater buffs, have we got a show for you! James Ijames’ latest masterpiece, “Fat Ham”, opened on Broadway at the American Airlines Theater and it’s an absolute hoot. Now, the main character Tio is high as a kite throughout the play, but let’s be real, who isn’t these days? And even though he’s a little delusional, Tio still raises some pretty important questions about the concept of harm and self-harm. We may as well be watching a modern-day “Hamlet”, but without all the drama and with a lot more giggles.
If Tio is the Horatio of “Fat Ham”, then he’s definitely the kind of pal you’d want to get lit with. He’s all about living life to the fullest and experiencing new things. In one of his wild dreams, he even gets it on with a gingerbread man, which is saying something since he’s usually more into the gingerbread ladies. Talk about a sweet tooth!
Speaking of sweet, “Fat Ham” is the sweetest take on “Hamlet” you’ll ever see. Gone are the days of palace drama and blood baths, because now we’ve got a raucous domestic comedy that’ll have you in stitches. And let’s be real, despite how much we argue and fight, there’s always a way out. That’s what “Fat Ham” teaches us. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, so you might as well dance your way towards it.
So, if you’re in the mood for a good laugh and some food for thought, then make your way to the American Airlines Theater and catch “Fat Ham” while you can. It’s got everything you need – humor, heart, and, of course, a gingerbread man romance. Can’t say we’ve seen that before!
