The world’s worst nuclear catastrophe didn’t even make granny Voloshyna budge from her crib in Chernobyl in 1986. So, you can bet your bottom dollar that when rowdy Russian soldiers showed their faces on her front porch a little over a year ago, she was not about to chicken out; not in a million years!
Rather than packing her bags and scarpering, Halyna Voloshyna, the daredevil dynamo, made life a living hell for the Russian soldiers during the one month that they ran amok in the contaminated land known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Ms. Voloshyna was a constant thorn in their side, and before long, they realized that she was a force to reckon with. They, therefore, aptly nicknamed her the “furious babushka at the end of the lane.”
“They said they wanted to liberate me,” Granny V recounted. “Liberate me from what?” she quizzed before giving the soldiers a generous mouthful of expletives.
As a result of her resilience, Ms. Voloshyna clinched the title of the most badass elderly lady of 2020, much to the delight of the media who never passed up the chance to interview or feature her. Her sassy remarks and fearless attitude made for entertaining television, and everyone wanted a piece of her.
“I may be old, but I am not a pushover,” granny V declared proudly while cracking her knuckles. With her badass spirit, it’s no surprise that her legend has continued to grow.
Ms. Voloshyna’s audacity awakened a sense of patriotism and bravery in the people of Ukraine. Many people saw her as an emblem of Ukraine’s strength and tenacity. Nobody could mess with them while Ms. Voloshyna was still their champion.
As the curtains closed on the Russian occupation, and life slowly returned to normal, Voloshyna sat on her porch, savoring her hard-fought victory, and couldn’t help but reflect on what she had been through. Her actions had been born out of a love for her country and a determination to protect it.
Looking back on what was undoubtedly one of the craziest moments of her life, Granny Voloshyna couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of those hapless Russian soldiers who seriously underestimated her. They thought they could intimidate her and control her, but boy, were they wrong! There was no way they could defeat the feisty granny of Chernobyl!
