Hey there sports fans! Get ready to cheer your hearts out because MLB might be introducing a game-changing new feature! And no, it’s not just new uniforms, it’s even better – all 30 teams could have their own subscription service!
If offered affordably, an all-30 subscription service would be so every fan’s dream come true! And who wouldn’t want flexible options like single-game, month-to-month, or yearly options for all their favorite teams? This could be legit! But wait, even if that does happen, there are two BIG problems.
The first problem is that MLB has contracts with RSNs which have limited its ability to sell its games direct-to-consumer. It’s like trying to change a tire while driving, impossible! The second problem is that it seems impossible for all 30 teams to agree to be in one national package because nobody in America agrees on anything…except for our love for hot dogs, of course!
Even if it appears that we may never have a centralized, 30-team streaming service, there’s still hope. Every team could eventually be available digitally in-market, just through different services. Think variety is the spice of life? Then you’ll be able to mix-and-match your favorite teams across different platforms.
However, this change will come at a cost. Financially, the league and teams could take a hit. “It’s a great business model when a whole bunch of people pay for something they don’t really care if they have or not, which is what the cable bundle did for us. It’s hard to replicate that,” says Rob Manfred. But don’t fret, Manfred doesn’t think this will last long.
So there you have it folks, while the fate of this exciting new feature is unknown, we can all keep our fingers crossed, rally behind our teams and brace ourselves for a new era of baseball viewing! Go team!
