Opinion | Glimmers of Hope for Saving Campus Chatter from Suffering a Silent Treatment

Published on

Alrighty folks, let’s talk about something that’s currently causing some major drama in the world of education: students shutting down conservative speakers, right-wing lawmakers limiting free expression, and online activists demanding that scholars be punished for expressing their opinions. Yup, it’s a mess.

But here’s the thing: I don’t think Yeats was talking about a moderate political stance when he mentioned the center in his poem. No no no, he was referring to something much more important: the moral foundation of a nation. And for the US, that means we need to have the Bill of Rights, including freedom of speech, at our core.

Sure, America was founded through sheer brute force, like so many other countries. But we have something special here too – a set of ideas that make us who we are. And when we stifle free speech, we’re basically throwing that all away.

So come on, people. Let’s not be like those petty lawmakers who try to silence their opponents. Let’s be better than those students who scream over any viewpoints they don’t agree with. We can do this – we can respect each other’s opinions, even if we don’t always see eye to eye.

In conclusion, let’s all channel our inner Yeats and remember that the center of our nation isn’t about politics – it’s about doing what’s right. And what’s right is letting everyone have a say, even if it’s something we don’t want to hear. Peace out.
