Connor McDavid, the NHL’s Jedi Master, has ‘freed his mind’: Will an Oilers Stanley Cup be the chosen one?

Published on

Connor McDavid, the Edmonton Oilers’ captain, has had a tremendous regular season, but it wasn’t without putting in some work during the offseason. After being unsatisfied with his defensive play, McDavid demanded critiques from his coaches and worked to improve his game away from the puck. According to Oilers assistant coach Glen Gulutzan, the transformation was “probably the biggest” he’s ever seen from an elite player. And it paid off, as McDavid has only enhanced his play away from the puck.

Summer 2020 was all about improving McDavid’s shot, as he took inspiration from Auston Matthews’ sharpshooting skills. McDavid spent hours practicing, leading his teammate Leon Draisaitl to predict that he’d net 60 goals this season. And the prediction proved accurate, as McDavid became the NHL’s top goal scorer, netting 64 goals.

As Oilers fans know, McDavid just completed one of the best regular seasons in NHL history. And he’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. He led the league in goals, assists, and points, making him the first player to do so since Wayne Gretzky in 1986-87. And he already has an impressive collection of trophies and awards, including the Rocket Richard, Art Ross, Hart Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award.

But McDavid is focused on more than just personal accolades. His ultimate goal is to bring the Stanley Cup to Edmonton, and he’s working hard to make that happen. In addition to his on-ice training, McDavid has also made changes to his lifestyle, incorporating pilates, ELDOA stretching, and a healthier diet. And he’s even taken university finance courses to expand his knowledge outside of hockey.

Despite his impressive success on the ice, McDavid hasn’t let it consume him. He’s discovered the importance of disconnecting from hockey and spending quality time with his family and loved ones. According to his mom, Kelly, “He’s got a totally different mindset. That level of maturity and that level of mental health has just been what turned him into this machine this year.”

All of McDavid’s efforts are focused on helping his team succeed, as he knows that winning the Stanley Cup takes a team effort. And with McDavid leading the way, Oilers fans have plenty to look forward to this postseason.
