Maryland Football Ditches Flashy Flag Uniforms, Opts for Vintage “Terps” Scribble Instead

Hold on to your hats, folks (or should we say helmets?), because the Terrapins are making a bold move that’s sure to ruffle some feathers. After years of donning the billowing flag design on their helmets, Maryland football is going back to the future with the script “Terps” design. And who better to thank for this groovy throwback than former coaches Bobby Ross and Ralph Friedgen, who made the design famous back in the day.
Athletic Director Damon Evans was nearly bursting with excitement when he announced the decision, which he says was a long time coming. “Our fans have been demanding it for years,” he gushed. “And let’s be honest, who can blame them? This iconic look is a classic, a real blast from the past that will take you all the way back to the championship years of Maryland football.”
It turns out that the team vote was the deciding factor in bringing back the script “Terps” design, which was initially Ross’s idea in 1982. He threw out the white helmets with a gold block “M” and replaced them with red helmets with white script “Terps”. At the time, people thought he was crazy, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. The Terps went on to win four bowl games and had a fantastic run with this new look.
While it’s true that winning games is determined by much more than how the team looks on the field, there’s no denying that looking sharp certainly doesn’t hurt. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to don a helmet with some pizzazz? The Terps have had quite the journey when it comes to their helmets, from black helmets with a red “M” to state flag-themed helmets. For the past ten years, they’ve been rocking the billowing flag design, but now it’s time to take a trip back to simpler times.
Since head coach Mike Locksley came on board in 2019, he’s made sure to incorporate the script “Terps” throwback design into the team’s wardrobe at least once every season. And it’s been a hit with the team, especially Locksley. “I grew up with the Terps script,” he said proudly. “There’s nothing more iconic than those uniforms. I remember watching players like Boomer Esiason and Frank Reich tear it up in those helmets.”
So, there you have it, folks. The Terrapins are reclaiming their groove with the script “Terps” design, and we bet they’re going to look spiffy doing it. Terp Nation, here we come!
