Well, well, well…look who’s finally getting a move on! Senators Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, have finally decided to push Congress to extend the insulin price cap. It only took them forever, but better late than never, I suppose.

In a statement on Friday, Shaheen and Collins said, “Don’t be a bunch of slowpokes, guys. Americans living with diabetes and their loved ones need this bill now more than ever!” Can’t argue with that logic.

The senators are urging Senate leadership to bring this bill to the floor ASAP. Finally, some urgency! The legislation was introduced on Thursday, so we’ll see how this goes.

As you may recall, President Joe Biden called on Congress during his State of the Union address to extend the insulin price cap. It’s about time someone listened to the guy! Maybe they were just taking a really long nap during that part of the speech.

Last year, the Inflation Reduction Act became law and capped the price of insulin at $35 a month for seniors on Medicare. But, of course, efforts to include people with private insurance died in Congress. Typical!

As it turns out, there are more than 2 million patients with diabetes who take insulin and are privately insured. Wow, who knew? And 150,000 patients who take insulin don’t even have insurance. That’s just sad.

In March, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi announced that they’d be slashing the prices of their most widely used insulin products. Maybe they were feeling generous, or maybe they finally realized they were being greedy. Whatever the reason, it’s a step in the right direction.

So there you have it, folks. The ball, or should I say needle, is in Congress’s court. Will they finally listen to Shaheen and Collins and extend the insulin price cap? We’ll just have to wait and see.
