GOP Fumbles on Abortion Issues, Tries to Keep Them Off Ballot Like an Awkward Secret

Published on

Guess what? The Ned legislature is thinking about pulling a fast one on voters! They want to put an amendment on the November ballot that raises the approval threshold for proposed constitutional changes to 66.7 percent instead of 50 percent. But voters would have no clue about that! Sneaky, sneaky! They plan to describe the proposal on the ballot as a measure to demand that voters be registered U.S. citizens and residents of Missouri. But, like, isn’t that already required in the state Constitution?
And get this – the person behind this ridiculous plan, State Representative Mike Henderson, is not saying a word to anyone about it. Shh, don’t tell anyone! During the House floor debate, GOP members claimed that they weren’t trying to trick anyone. Sure, Jan.
Can you believe it? Legislatures across the country started restricting abortions over a decade ago, but Ohio was like, “I’m gonna be the best at this!” They continue to be at the forefront of those efforts. Remember that crazy so-called heartbeat law? It banned abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, when most women don’t even know they’re carrying a tiny human. Ohio passed it in 2019, but it’s been blocked, for now, by a court.
Just when you think it can’t get any worse, Ohio made headlines again in July. A 10-year-old rape victim needed an abortion, but doctors said it was too late. She had to go all Indiana Jones and travel to Indiana to get it done. Sad face 🙁
But wait, there’s more! Ohio Republicans had the bright idea to change the percentage of votes needed to pass citizen-led amendments right after the elections in November. It didn’t pass because rowdy protestors flooded the Statehouse and shouted at the legislators from the top gallery. That’ll teach them!
